Refusal of Help

Refusal of Help
Suspicion and isolation
Tom and other community members try to persuade Axel to accept services and leave the cold. Axel believes institutions are watching or controlling people and refuses the VA and charitable assistance.
Bella as his anchor
Bella stays close through his paranoia, substance use, and nights outside. Her loyalty gives him comfort, but it cannot replace medical care, stable housing, or a dependable community.
Defending the Camp

A home destroyed
Three young men vandalize Axel’s tent and belongings while he watches, frightened and frozen. Bella recognizes the threat as resembling the coyotes that once hunted her and Big Kitten.

Decline without care
Axel’s trauma and substance dependence intensify, and he becomes increasingly unable to care for himself or Bella. After returning from another absence, he uses drugs and falls unconscious beside her.
A final night together
Axel dies, and Bella stays by his body through the night. She understands that his scent is changing and that a person who loved her will not rise again.
The Dog Left Behind

The Dog Left Behind
A public farewell
Veterans and neighbors gather by the river and sing the Marines’ Hymn as Axel’s body is taken away. Bella receives no clear place in their ritual and is left beside his blankets.
Another departure
Bella mourns Axel but resumes her journey toward Lucas. She leaves his remaining belongings behind, repeating the painful pattern of loving people who cannot accompany her home.
